Herbaceous plants are plants that don’t form a woody stem, meaning the plant dies down to the root each year. This is in contrast to shrubs, which have woody stems and would only lose their leaves, and not their stems, in winter.

Herbaceous plants can be categorised as annual, biennial or perennial. By definition, every annual plant is herbaceous because it’s a non-woody plant. Biennials also lack woody stems, but not all biennials are herbaceous, as not all die back in winter. Some perennial plants are also herbaceous, which are commonly referred to as herbaceous perennials.

Herbaceous plants are known for their colourful and textured leaves, or their bright flowers. Varieties of herbaceous plants include Acanthus Whitewater with its variegated green and white leaves, and Heuchera Fire Chief with its bright red leaves. When it comes to flowering herbaceous plants, Agapanthus and Penstemon are popular varieties.
