How To Prepare Your Garden For Spring

How To Prepare Your Garden For Spring

Whilst winter is seen as a dormant time for your garden, it’s also the opportune moment to plan for how you want your garden to look in spring. And with spring soon approaching, it’s a better time than any to jump into planning and working out what you want your garden to look like going into spring and progressing into summer, and also what plants you want to include in your green space too. So what can you do to help prepare your garden for spring?

Optimise Your Garden Layout

Whilst your garden isn’t in constant use and plants are dormant, it’s the best time to decide whether you want to change your entire garden layout. Moving greenery around in the summer can be distressing for plants, shrubs and small trees alike, so it’s best to redesign your layout before you add any new plants in and whilst your existing plants are dormant.

Changing your garden layout is a great chance to optimise your green space to make it easier to navigate, also maximising space in your garden for more plants and shrubs. You may also want to add new features to your garden, including a raised vegetable patch or a water feature.

Plant A New Tree

The build-up to spring is the time for big plans and big decisions. And in your garden, there won’t be many plants bigger than a tree to include. There are many benefits to having a tree in your garden, including offering shade, blocking views into your garden and purifying the air. Over time, a tree can also help to sustain wildlife, and the blossom in spring also adds a splash of colour to your garden.

There are many different trees you can choose from, including fruit trees as well as native broadleaf trees such as oak and ash. At Shrubgarden you can find a range of different trees, including the Magnolia × soulangeana, holly trees and a number of fruit trees; including apple, pear and cherry.

Add A Splash Of Colour

One thing that can really pop in a spring garden is the addition of colourful plants to your garden. The likelihood is that if you’re buying new plants in spring, they won’t have had a chance to show their colour yet. Therefore it’s important to do your research to find out the kind of colourful plants available and what colours they’ll bloom into.

At Shrubgarden, there are a number of flowering plants and shrubs you can choose from, including the red flowers of the Escallonia Crimson Spire and the orange or salmon-coloured ones found on the Azalea japonica Orange Beauty. And if you’re looking for something that changes colour all year long, then you’ll love the orange, red and yellow hues of the Physocarpus Magic Ball and its pink flowers in spring and summer.

Bring In Experts For Arboriculture

Whilst it can be tempting to attempt everything in your garden, there are a few things that it might be safer to leave with the experts. This includes a range of arboricultural services, especially when relating to trees, large shrubs and hedges.

Tree surgeons and arboricultural experts are able to help with a number of garden-related tasks, including pruning tree branches, felling entire trees, and also removing pesky tree stumps. As well as their expertise, the best tree surgeons also use specialist equipment such as stump grinding machines and mobile elevated work platforms when working at height.

In addition to this, many arboriculturists can also carry out services like garden clearances and vegetation removal, ensuring you can have your overgrown garden cleared, leaving you with a blank canvas to regrow what you want.
