Countryside Stewardship: BN7 & BN11 Explained

Countryside Stewardship: BN7 & BN11 Explained

At Northumberland Trees and Hedging, we don’t just grow and supply cell-grown, peat-free hedging plants — we also help customers make the most of government funding available through the Countryside Stewardship scheme. Two of the most popular capital grants for hedgerows are BN7 (Hedgerow Gapping-Up) and BN11 (Planting New Hedges).

Below, we explain what each one covers, what you can claim, and how we can help you succeed.

BN7 — Hedgerow Gapping-Up

What it covers:

  • Funding to restore existing hedges by filling in gaps where plants have been lost.
  • Ensures hedges are continuous, stronger, and better for wildlife.

Grant rate:
💷 £17.22 per metre (2025 rate)

Key conditions:

  • Hedge must be at least 20 metres long.
  • Gaps must be less than 20 metres wide.
  • Hedge must already be composed mainly of native species (80%+).
  • Planting must be carried out during the dormant season (Nov–Mar).
  • Planted in two staggered rows with the correct density.
  • Protection (fencing or guards) required to prevent damage from stock, rabbits, or deer.

BN11 — Planting New Hedges

What it covers:

  • Funding for creating entirely new hedgerows where none currently exist.
  • Can be used to reconnect fragmented hedges, protect soil and water, reduce erosion, or provide new habitat.

Grant rate:
💷 £22.97 per metre (2025 rate)

Key conditions:

  • You must manage both sides of the hedge.
  • Planting must be carried out during the dormant season (Nov–Mar).
  • Ground must be prepared (weed control, 1.5m wide strip).
  • Only native species can be used, meeting height and age requirements.
  • Must be planted in two staggered rows, at the correct spacing.
  • Ongoing maintenance is required, including replacing any failures.

Why These Grants Matter

  • 🌱 Boost biodiversity — provide food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and small mammals.
  • 🌍 Support climate goals — hedges capture carbon, improve soil, and reduce runoff.
  • 🐑 Practical benefits — hedges provide stock shelter, reduce wind exposure, and define field boundaries.
  • 💷 Financial help — the grants cover a large proportion of planting costs.
